Starter & Ignition FAQs

How long do ignition starters last?

A starter motor can often last around 100,000 to 150,000 miles, although its lifespan varies based on driving habits, vehicle use, and component quality. If you notice slow cranking, clicking sounds, or intermittent starting problems, have the starting system inspected.

Are the ignition and starter the same thing?

No, the ignition system and starter are separate parts that work together to start your vehicle. The ignition switch initiates the starting process, while the starter motor uses electrical power from the battery to crank the engine.

Can a bad starter drain a battery?

A malfunctioning starter can draw excessive electrical current and place additional strain on the battery. If starting problems continue, having the battery, starter, and related electrical connections inspected can help identify the cause.

What makes a starter go bad?

Starter problems can be caused by loose or corroded electrical connections, worn internal components, or electrical faults. Normal wear over time can also reduce the starter's ability to crank the engine reliably.

Do I need a new key if I replace the ignition switch?

Whether you need a new key depends on your vehicle and the type of ignition system it uses. Some modern vehicles may require a replacement key or programming so the key and vehicle's security system work properly with the new ignition components.

What Our Customers Are Saying

Honesty and integrity. Actually didn’t have work done because they analyzed my vehicle and realized it was a tire problem. Didn’t even charge me. Because they were honest and told me the problem without charging, I will be back with all my vehicles.

I've been going to Hud's for several years and they have worked on multiple cars of mine. I've been having persistent issues with my current vehicle, with the AC, and the check engine light kept coming on. It was taken somewhere else (not by me) multiple times and had a few very expensive bandaids slapped on it. Recently, the light came back on, so I took the car to Huds. Their prices are very reasonable and they're kind people who will work with you. As a single woman, this is incredibly important to me. I drove off, and the next day the light came back on so I called Huds. They took the car back in and replaced another part, no extra charge. I appreciate their hard work, honesty, and integrity. Huds actually fixes the problem, not the symptoms.

Excellent and friendly service! Said it would be 2-3 days but we got it back next day! We were met with a smile and listened to. They fixed an issue that was caused by another shop and changed the oil for us because they noticed it needed it. Car sounds great!

Huds Auto went above and beyond helping us with my stepson's truck. From the moment we bought the truck, they were professional, honest, and kept us informed throughout the entire process. They did a phenomenal job, and you can tell they truly care about their customers and the quality of their work. It's hard to find an auto shop you can genuinely trust, but Huds Auto has definitely earned ours. We highly recommend them to anyone looking for reliable, knowledgeable, and friendly service. Thank you for taking such great care of us!
